New Staff Restaurant and Training Centre

New Staff Restaurant and Training Centre
Charles Wells Ltd, the Eagle Brewery, Bedford:

New-Staff-Restaurant-and-TriningThe design brief was for a new building on the Eagle Brewery.

The ground floor staff restaurant and hospitality bar replaced elderly existing facilities; the area occupied by the demolished staff canteen forming part of the site for the new building.

The staff training centre, located on the first floor of the new building, has been built to allow training of brewery tenants and managers to take place for the first time in purpose facilities made for this purpose, the new facilities including a new area of car parking adjacent to the new building. A new directors’ board room has also bee included at first floor level.

A rectilinear plan was dictated by the limitations of the site, and the need for cost effective and efficient use of available space. The structure is steel framed, with brick finish external cavity walls. Internal walls are concrete block.

The main entrance to the building is clearly signalled by a glass external porch curving down from the side of the lift and staircase tower, which gives access onto a small entrance hall, from which a spiral staircase gives access to the first floor. The hospitality bar is also access from the entrance hall.

Entrance to the staff restaurant can be either via a second external entrance off the car park, or internally from the hospitality bar. A large open plan kitchen area is located behind the long servery opposite the restaurant external entrance; food storage areas and staff kitchen facilities being behind the kitchen, with a separate staff and delivery entrance accessed off the brewery service road at the side of the new building. Staff WC facilities are centrally positioned for ease of access from both hospitality bar and restaurant.

The new directors’ board room is located just off the first floor landing area, on one side of the access corridor; a large training room bring on the opposite side, with two smaller training rooms and WC facilities to the rear.
